Have you received the payment request? Don't forget to pay by the end of the month.
For property owners whose Municipal Property Tax (IMI) value exceeds 100 euros, November is the month to settle the final installment of the amount.
Who reminds it is the Tax Authority (AT), in a publication released on the Facebook social network, where it alerts taxpayers who have a property in their possession, that "November is the month of payment of the last installment of the Municipal Property Tax", so you should "consult your payment notice in your reserved area of the Finance Portal".
Note that, in addition to being able to check directly on the Portal das Finanças, you will also receive the payment notice for the amount due in this last installment, at your tax address.
What are the deadlines for paying IMI, according to the amount to be settled?
The first thing to consider regarding the IMI is that the payment deadlines vary according to the amount to be settled.
That is, an IMI value below 100 euros must be paid in a single installment in May; an IMI value between 100 and 500 euros, must be paid in two installments in May and November; and an IMI value above 500 euros can be paid in three installments in May, August, and November.
According to AT data, in 2023, 4,082,440 IMI settlements were issued, of which 916,359 were settlements up to 100 euros, 2,486,548 settlements between 100 and 500 euros, and 679,533 settlements of value greater than 500 euros.
Even with the deadlines set, it is still possible to pay the full tax in the month of May, even if it is done in installments depending on the amount in question. That's what happened with more taxpayers in 2023, compared to 2022: 556,011 taxpayers paid the tax in advance, in full, with the reference included in the May assessment note.
The Property Tax to be paid is annually set by each municipality, and it can be between 0.3% and 0.45%, limit values set by the Government. There may be exceptions to the rates in cases of vacant or dilapidated properties. Then, the IMI value is calculated based on the Taxable Property Value (VPT) of each property, as of December 31 of the year to which the tax relates.
