Reassessment of property taxes for lower payments? Learn how to request until December 31 at the Tax Authority.
If you own a property, you can reduce the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) by requesting a revaluation of the property value until December 31st. Find out how.
Who can request a reassessment of IMI and how to make the request?
If you own a property in Portugal, you can pay less Property Tax (IMI) by requesting a reevaluation of the property value.
The deadline to make the request ends on December 31, but before proceeding, DECO PROteste recommends confirming if the request will be advantageous. To do so, as stated by Notícias ao Minuto, you can perform a simulation on DECO's website.
Requests for reassessment can be made with minimum intervals of three years. For example, in 2024, only owners who have not submitted requests in 2022, 2023, or in the same year of 2024 for the same property can proceed.
You can place the order in person at a counter of the Tax and Customs Authority (AT) or online, through the Finance Portal.
Steps to submit the request on the Finance Portal:
- Access 'All services'.'
- Select 'Municipal Property Tax';
- Choose 'Model 1 (Registration/Update)' and click on 'Submit statement'.
- Choose between pre-filled or empty declaration;
- Fill in the field 'Type of building to evaluate';
- Insert the data into the 'Declaration Elements';
- Fill in the 'Matrix indication' section;
- Provide the information required in 'Owners, Usufructuaries or Building Surface Owners'.
- Complete the data related to the 'Building Elements', using the property booklet.
- Detail the 'Characterization' of the property.
- Fill in 'Other elements', such as the Date of Use License and the age of the building;
- Validate the data, correct any errors, and submit the request.
If you want to reduce your IMI bill, now is the ideal time to act. You have until December 31!
