Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly: When can it be suspended or end?

These are the cases in which CSI can be suspended or terminated.

In 2025, the first "reinforced" Elderly Support Supplement (CSI) was already paid, with an increase of 30 euros (a rise that came into effect this year).

Support is paid to "elderly people with low resources," at least 66 years and 7 months old, residing in Portugal. An exception is made for disabled pensioners who "do not have a minimum age to apply for the pension" and "can apply for CSI, except if they are beneficiaries of the Social Benefit for Inclusion," as explained by Social Security on its website, as cited by Notícias ao Minuto.

A concern that is raised is: When can this support be suspended or even terminated? First, it can be suspended in the following cases:

• The resources of the elderly exceed the established limit;

• The elderly person does not communicate to Social Security the changes that occurred to the composition or income of the household.

• Do not communicate change of residence to foreign nationals.

• Penalty of deprivation of freedom.

• Not fulfilling any of your obligations.

Note that in case of suspension, "the payment of CSI is suspended from the following month" in which the incidents occurred" and is "restarted in the month following the resolution of the situation".  

E can be terminated in these situations: 

• Two years will pass from the beginning of a suspension.

• If it is found that the beneficiary made false statements;

• The beneficiary passed away.

In addition, the beneficiary is entitled to the benefit of the month in which they die, regardless of the day of the month on which the death occurs, as can be read in the news.
